Sometimes looking at music not only by checking out certain releases or what an artist says in an interview can lead to varying forms: Our Specials range from lengthy looks at scenes in certain places or at particular collectives releasing music in various shapes and formations. Furthermore we use our Specials page to host premieres for new music: Singles or videos but also sometimes even whole albums.
Austin, Texas-based My Education formed in 1999 and has released eight full-length albums. The band is currently in the final phases of preparing their new LP Emka for release on Somewherecold Records. It is a trans-hemispheral collaboration that culminated in a week of ecstatic sessions at the famed Sonic Ranch studios in Tornillo, TX with Charles Godfrey (Swans, Trail of Dead, etc.).
The two unnaturally mountain moving noise units EARTHFLESH and EYEROLLS embark on their first mutual journey through the vast and often monochromatic fields of noise and elongated drones – a trek that morphed into the evocative and beckoning ELEMENTAL TROCITIES, that’s to be released on August 26 via Bent Window Records on CD and Trepanation Recordings on tape.
We are known for trying to dig deep and this time might be the deepest we ever dug, because Tysk Tysk Task is presenting us with some psychedelic riot girl grunge that is as Lo-Fi as rock can get without descending into the muddy banks of the Wishkah.
There are only a few bands that really defined a certain genre with their music and their sound. Dre defined HipHop, Elvis defined Rock’n’Roll, Joy Division defined Post-Punk - and, yes, ISIS defined Post-Metal. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone when loads of modern-day Post-Metal and Post-Rock artists are inspired by them, just like Ian Stokely.
So, we got another premiere for you - this time from a relatively new band called Touccan from France. They allowed us to share their whole very upbeat and uplifting record with you before its release on Friday
The first day of the second half of 2022 - and we couldn’t be happier as we are celebrating with the song premiere of a new single by none other than Deer Park Ranger!
“UR” - the name of supposedly one of the very oldest cities in the world, founded by the old Sumerians. If we tried to transpond that into music, it will probably be some of the deepest sounds possible in order to describe the depth and the age of that city. OR we can simply listen to UR, the collaborative record by some of Consouling Sounds’ most interesting artists. And today you can listen to the record in full here on VoS!
Once again we are blown away by the quality and also the sheer quantity of releases that WPRD mastermind Ronnie throws at us with this month’s WPRD Roundup. Make sure to check out all the records on this list - also the ones we already reviewed!
New week, new Hundred Year Old Man premiere. This time it is the live version of “A New Terror” and “Black Fire”.
Last week we were fortunate enough to give you a premiere for a live video of HYOM doing two songs from their upcoming record “Sleep in Light”. And guess what we’re doing today? We give you two more songs off that album.
After a short pause from the Records from the Heart series we are back with a very interesting guest review by none other than Michael Socrates who reviewed one of his major musical influences, the 90s alternative rock band Stabbing Westward!
Hundred Year Old Man are one of those bands that are still on the darker side of that razor-thin knife that says “breakthrough”. A band more than beloved by everyone who has ever been at one of their shows or bought one of their records - but that number is not as big as it could be. Should be. That might be about to change with their upcoming record, Sleep in Light which will be released by Consouling Sounds on June 17th, 2022.
If you are somewhat familiar with TripHop you will know another great band like Portishead with a wonderful female lead voice - Morcheeba. And maybe Lamb. And somewhere in between these two voices gifted by the graces themselves with an enchanting warmth and “soul-ful-ness” lies the voice of Tåran Reindal - and we are happy to present her collaboration with Northern Germany’s Heimlich Manøver today.
Everyone who grew up in the 90s or early 00s knows Liam - the guy whose voice turned already perfect rock’n’roll songs into anthems. Yes, Liam Gallagher who gave us vocal performances by the grace of god - just listen to “Champagner Supernova” or “Roll With It”. And very often we are reminded of how influential Oasis were. Chasing Foxes are yet another example of how.
Another unfortunate event for the VoS & WPRD crew! This time it prevented the WPRD mastermind to sent out the list for March early enough and then we decided to rather combine the March and April lists together - meaning you have more to go through and enjoy!
We have a strong affinity to Post-Rock and therefore we love to talk about many bands from many countries. However, there are not many bands of that genre from Estonia - but one of them is awesome: Wolfredt! The band just toured Germany and we are really proud to present you this premiere on our 1st birthday!
Since the release of their album, Monosphere were not just sitting around, but they have recorded a special live performance called Monosphere live at Wnaderlust Radialklang. Today we are happy to present you the first song off this album. It is the live version of The Verdict.
Switzerland. Land of the mountains. Of cheese and chocolate. Of good watches and secretive banks. Of bands that cannot be defined by one genre alone. Enter as exhibit: Soldat Hans. It’s partially post-rock, partially dream-pop, partially doom-metal. It’s great and thus it’s an honor for us to present the new single off of their forthcoming album.
Four weeks ago we gave you the review by Kjetil from Årabrot and we said this might be the oldest thing we ever review - and now Eugene from Oxbow talks about a record much older - from the late 50s! Talk about interesting choices and musical interests!
The very first note is usually the most important one as it decides whether we want to continue listening or not. With the first Gairo-track I heard I knew I would love the rest. A bit psychedelic, a bit folksy and yet foreshadowing and telling you that there will be something else “behind” this entrance of calmness - a whirlwind of riffs and force. Welcome to HER.
A live-shot video for an Italian Post-Metal/Post-Rock EP by a band unknown to most of us? Let’s go! Here you can check out Metide’s new song “Circædian” which will be released on March 25. Have a good look and maybe you will also be among those who will seek notifications for every further Metide-release.
There is normal music and there is unusual music. And then there are sounds. Einstürzende Neubauten once sang “Silence is not sexy at all” because silence meant death. When listening to Sound Animal and watching their latest video, one definitely feels alive, because this track is anything but silent!
The month of February might go down as one of the craziest of the last couple of years and everybody was trying to keep up with the enormous amount of awesome albums being released everywhere. We tried to do our best, just like WPRD also tried. But even with our abundance of reviews there are still numerous records left that WPRD wants to highlight in this roundup for February!
This guest review might feature the oldest record featured on VoS for quite a while because it is none other than Captain Beefheart’s seminal record Safe As Milk! And who else could have a really soft spot for this record in his big, big heart than Kjetil, the man with the tallest hat, from Årabrot!
There is always a certain urgency in the songs of Terzij de Horde which makes them stand out from most black metal bands at the moment. They are sad, but not bitter. They’re energetic but not self-centered. Angry but not forgetting the others. Therefore we are so proud to give you their new song: “Cheiron”!
